GFA is a non-profit organization that protects the unique ocean environment beyond the Golden Gate.
Greater Farallones Association is non-profit organization founded in 1995 to increase public appreciation and guardianship of the ocean. GFA works in partnership with the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary to protect the unique ocean environment beyond the Golden Gate through education, outreach and stewardship.
The Sanctuary encompasses one of only five coastal upwelling areas in the world, areas rich in nutrients, plankton, krill and fish. Because of this, the Sanctuary is home to the largest breeding population of seabirds in the contiguous United States, and more than 36 identified marine mammal species. Seabirds, seals, sea lions, white sharks and whales travel thousands of miles for the rich feast available in the Sanctuary.
